The Standard Has Been Set for the Steel City Hoops Classic

The Steel City Hoops Classic wasted no time delivering on its promise.

In its inaugural showcase at the Convention Center, the event brought together some of the top high school talent in the Pittsburgh area, and the result was a statement night for both the present and future of the game. Featuring matchups between the Class of 2027 and the Class of 2028, the Classic offered a glimpse of rising stars while immediately establishing a competitive edge between the Steel and Bridge teams.

In the Class of 2027 game, the Steel Team set the tone for the event with a commanding 107–79 victory over the Bridge Team. The performance was fueled by Allderdice junior guard Keith Taylor, who delivered one of the standout efforts of the night, pouring in 28 points. He earned Game MVP honors and helped define the identity of the Steel Team in the Classic’s first-ever game.

But if the 2027 group belonged to Steel, the Class of 2028 made sure the Bridge Team had its moment.

In the second game of the showcase, the Bridge Team responded with a strong 100–84 victory over the Steel Team. This time, it was Sewickley Academy sophomore Mamadou Kane who took center stage. Kane finished with 22 points. For his efforts, Kane was named Game MVP, becoming the second player to leave a lasting mark on the young event.

Beyond the scores and individual accolades, the Steel City Hoops Classic immediately proved it could deliver high-level competition and meaningful moments. The split results between Steel and Bridge added an early layer of rivalry, one that could define the event for years to come.

After just one night, one thing is already clear: the standard has been set in the Steel City Hoops Classic.
