The rivalry between Pittsburgh and Penn State is heading to one of college basketball’s most iconic venues.
The Panthers and Nittany Lions will meet on Nov. 8 at the historic Palestra in Philadelphia, marking the 150th all-time meeting between the in-state rivals. The game will also be part of the Palestra’s 100th anniversary celebration, adding even more significance to one of Pennsylvania’s premier basketball matchups.
Known as the “Cathedral of College Basketball,” the Palestra has hosted countless memorable games since opening in 1927. Its rich tradition and intimate atmosphere make it one of the sport’s most recognizable arenas, providing a fitting backdrop for a rivalry that dates back more than a century.
Penn State enters the matchup holding a narrow 76-73 edge in the all-time series, though Pitt claimed the most recent meeting in emphatic fashion. The Panthers rolled to an 80-46 victory over the Nittany Lions last December at the GIANT Center in Hershey, continuing the recent renewal of the rivalry at neutral sites.
For both programs, the Nov. 8 contest presents an early measuring stick before conference play begins. Pitt will look to build momentum against a familiar foe, while Penn State aims to even the score after last season’s lopsided defeat.
